Case Study: How We Scaled Website Traffic for WA Potatoes’ “The Good Carb” with SEO & Google Ads
WA Potatoes is the official organisation representing potato growers across Western Australia. To help advocate for the industry and connect directly with consumers, they created a dedicated brand and website: The Good Carb. It is packed with delicious potato recipes, nutritional facts, sustainability information, and budget-saving tips designed to inspire more Australians to put local spuds on their plates.

The results
Tracking and reporting on your results is an essential part of any SEO, Google Ads and digital marketing strategy. Here at GCD we put together monthly reports for all our clients detailing what has been done, the results and what we plan to do the next month based on the results. Plus we include super easy to digest videos for those clients who prefer to listen than read. 😉
We started working with WA Potatoes in July 2023 – the below stats are based on data for 2025 vs. 2024.
36% Increase in Total Users to the Website
Across both Google Organic and CPC (ads) combined, we successfully brought over 10,000 more unique individuals to the site to learn about WA potatoes and browse recipes.
45k Google Ads Clicks
Our paid campaigns in 2025 accumulated 1.2 million impressions and 44,864 clicks from highly targeted West Australian traffic with only a $500 ad spend per month. This traffic had some of the highest engagement rates and time spent on site.
30% More Organic Search Traffic
Proving the long-term value of our SEO foundations, organic search sessions grew by over 30%, driving 12,836 highly engaged sessions in 2025. Even with the emergence of AI search in 2025, organic search traffic continues to grow year on year.
Google Drives Nearly 70% of All Website Traffic
Thanks to our combined SEO and Google Ads strategy, 69.4% of all visitors to The Good Carb in 2025 were acquired directly through Google, establishing it as the ultimate growth engine for the brand.
The brief
WA Potatoes came to us with this:
“We are looking to really maximise the content we have on the thegoodcarb.com.au website to encourage people in WA to eat more fresh potatoes. We have invested a lot into recipes and information, and I think we could be performing much better with SEO optimisation and on Google”.
The purpose of The Good Carb website is to re-educate the public and shake off the negative stigma surrounding carbohydrates. By showcasing that WA potatoes are good to eat, good for your body, good for the planet, and good for your budget, the website acts as a vibrant consumer hub. It is packed with delicious potato recipes, nutritional facts, sustainability information, and budget-saving tips designed to inspire more Australians to put local spuds on their plates.
Our approach
Our first step was to ensure the website was as SEO-friendly as possible, establishing it as a continuous tool to attract organic and AI-driven search traffic.
A key objective for The Good Carb was to connect specifically with audiences in Perth and Western Australia. While SEO is crucial for this, competing organically for recipe keywords means going up against massive, high-authority websites like taste.com.au.
Therefore, we recommended a dual SEO and Google Ads strategy. This allowed us to complement our long-term organic work with targeted ads shown exclusively to users in WA.
We proposed a highly efficient campaign structure: 5 hours of agency management and a $500 click budget per month. While there were many long-term goals for WA Potatoes, we knew that a focused, consistent approach of 5 hours a month would keep the project budget-friendly while still delivering measurable, month-over-month progress.
